Ukraine - Lviv

As my job sometimes allows me to go somewhere further, last year I was able to see again (twice!) beautiful city of Lviv in Ukraine. It's a city with huge influence from different nations. First information about settlements are from IX century and connected with tribe that participated in creation of Polish country. Later this territory was lost to Kingdom of Galicia–Volhynia. Prince Daniel (later king) founded around year 1250 city Lviv - name comes from his son Lion. In 1340 it was acquired by Polish King Casimir III the Great, and joined to Poland in 1387. It become important city of Polish Kingdom. After Partition of Poland in 1772 it was owned by Habsburg (Austrian) Empire, and name was changed to Lemberg. In 1918 after Poland regained independence Lwów (Polish name) was for the last time part of Poland - till 1939 when Soviet army invaded Poland from east (Germany did it from west). After II world war USSR "gave" eastern parts of Poland to Belarus PRS and Ukraine PRS. When Ukraine regained independence Lviv become one of major city of this newborn country.

One of most important sights is definitely Lviv Opera. It was opened on October 4, 1900, and from this time till today is gathering a lot of people for shows, and also just to see building itself - it's possible to see it from inside - ticket costs about 1 EUR.

I'm not really sure why monument of Backpack was erected, but it's definitely really cool point to see. It can be found in the courtyard of Geographical department of Lviv National University, so entry is only through building.

Other points that are worth visiting are:

  • Armenian Cathedral of Lviv
  • Mountain "High Castle" - remains of old city castle
  • Kumpel restaurant - local Ukrainian (and also Polish) food, self-made beer, and local liquors.

I can recommend visiting of this city to everybody. It might not be still very "western" but, it is aspiring to be one. It is also in my opinion pretty safe city - just watch out for cars, as drivers are a little mad 😃. Public transport is not best one - but UBER exists there, and it is cheap!
